Staff Story: Drew's Favorite Photo

What’s working at camp like from the staff perspective?

Here’s a “story behind the photo” from Drew Foster, a blacksmithing and woodworking instructor at Falling Creek in 2024. It features one of his favorite photos from the past summer, and why the photo brings back good memories of camp.

He sent us the photo on the left, along with the story below, to share why this is a memorable photo from the summer.

"I picked these two photos because it shows counselors and campers working together as a team."

I chose this photo from an Evening Program game during Junior Camp in 2024. I’m blindfolded in the photo, and one of my campers, Gus, is guiding me.

The context is that we had to do a kind of obstacle course, where we had to go in a straight line and around a barrel in the middle of the field. The counselors had to be blindfolded, and then we had a camper hop on our backs and kind of like ‘ratatouille’ us on a certain path.

They could use taps or verbally communicate with you, whatever helped you get all the way to that barrel and make it back to your Cabin Line without colliding with any other counselors or campers.

I was definitely scared for a little bit, but it was probably the most fun I had at camp in that moment. I was actually able to let go and just trust Gus that I wouldn’t collide with anyone. He gave me little taps to go left, to go right, or keep walking or stop.

Gus did a great job. We didn’t collide, so we made it back in one piece.

I picked these two photos because it shows counselors and campers working together as a team. In the photo with the group of counselors, you can see lots of smiles going on in the background. It was just a fun, enjoyable time.

This took place at the end of the summer, during Junior Camp. Because of that, there was also this feeling of relief that all summer we’ve been guiding the campers, but now at the end, the campers kind of get to guide us.

We were so glad to hear Drew’s memories from a favorite summer photo! Current staff or alumni, do you have a favorite photo from camp? Share it with us, along with the story behind the photo, at
