In today’s day and age, people too often dismiss the value of being a camp counselor in favor of pursuing a big internship or really anything directly involving what they are learning in school. I decided to believe that being a camp counselor was also a great idea, and last summer I learned why. My broadway production internship last summer was a foundation that puts on week-long theater intensives each week in different cities around the country, and being a former camp counselor as on of their lead interns proved to put me at a massive advantage. Being a counselor taught me how to think on my feet and take initiative, which was a skill that was tremendously valued by my superiors. Every week I would have tons of parents come up to me and personally thank me for working with their children, and it was unmistakably because I had been a camp counselor and knew best how to work with the kids.
